My Story

After stumbling my way through a career change, I’m passionate about passing on what I’ve learned.

From an early age I knew I wanted to become a scientist. I followed a very traditional path - college, grad school, corporate job.

In my first “real” job, I learned there was a lot I didn’t know about succeeding in a corporate environment. I struggled with some of the “soft skills” but I was fortunate to have supportive mentors who helped me learn what I didn’t know.

After six years as a laboratory chemist, I was ready for a career change, but I had limited exposure to what I could do next. I used the tools I had available - like my ability to connect with others - and I pivoted to a new career as a retail data analyst.

In my second career, I continued to build my career knowledge toolkit, as I handled new challenges. Along the way, I became a resource to others in similar situations.

What started out as just sharing knowledge in informal settings, turned out to be one of my greatest passions. I feel strongly that everyone should have a career they love, and I’d be honored to help you get there.

My family

I’m a wife to William and mom to Josephine (aka #BabyPi). We live in the Twin Cities where we enjoy all the fun things the area has to offer. My husband is a mathematician and it looks like our daughter is starting to catch the STEM bug.

Fun fact: my husband and I met on Twitter!

I’m an avid knitter

Knitting is my favorite creative pursuit! I began knitting almost 10 years ago, and its become both a creative outlet for me, as well as a relaxation technique. I also own an Etsy shop where I sell my creations, JTM Knits.

I’m a freelance writer

My writing journey began when I started a blog about my life as a PhD student. I began my freelance writing career after I completed a writing fellowship at A Practical Wedding, the largest independent wedding website. My work has been featured on The Billfold, The Spruce, and Motherly, and I’m currently a staff writer for A Practical Wedding.
